Novice Riders and Lessons at The Hideout Lodge & Guest Ranch
Never ridden before? Or returning to the saddle after a long break? You’re warmly welcome at The Hideout. While we’re primarily a riding and horsemanship ranch rather than a dedicated training facility, we are experienced at welcoming and teaching first-time and novice riders.
What to Expect as a Beginner
We regularly host groups that include novice, intermediate and advanced riders. Our “bombproof” beginner horses are calm, patient and perfectly suited to those learning the basics. Each guest receives a professional orientation and is matched to a horse suited to their current ability.
Riding Lessons
The Hideout provides riding lessons in very small groups and, where possible, individually. Our instruction covers:
- Understanding horse psychology and behaviour before technical riding skills
- Basic horsemanship principles that make every moment around horses more comfortable
- Mounting, seat, balance and rein communication
- Wrangler guidance during trail rides throughout your stay
Safety
Helmets are required for all riders 14 years of age and under. A strict 230-pound weight limit applies to all riders. We prioritise safety above all else.
Our Guarantee
Understanding basic horsemanship principles creates a far more comfortable, enjoyable and rewarding experience around horses. Many guests who arrive as nervous beginners leave having discovered a genuine love of horses and riding.
